• Arthur Friedrich Edmonds

Hello! I am interested in and do:
    • Photography, chiefly in a style resembling the Düsseldorf school, preoccupied with objectivity and idealised form.
    • Film, to satisfy a directly opposing impulse - to understand and reproduce how and why living things live.
    • Creative programming, for anything and everything not covered by the above.

Although I grew up in England, I call Germany my home and reside in Frankfurt. I studied Digital Humanities in Würzburg, and am doing my Masters in Computer Science at Darmstadt.
This website serves as repository for the projects I do, where all my pursuits are represented. I have also interspersed some thoughts and other information for someone looking to get to know me a little. I hope it sparks joy.

  • Untitled (2026)

A photo series together with Blaykyi Kenyah.

    Our thoughts:

    Blaykyi

These photos extend the aesthetics in a previous work we made together, also untitled, and something I'm particularly proud of is how we were able to maintain the anti-preciousness with which we approached making that work. I find it slightly difficult, but somewhat naughty, to admit to people that these were printed in a pharmacy.

    Arthur

When making the photos, we were interested in making a work that was suggestive, but where what was being suggested remained very open ended. We shot the scenes in a flat, sober style, as if they were strange stock photos or steps in an instruction manual. The gestures shown are enigmatic, especially as little context is provided. They invite individual attention, yet work together as one piece.

  • Hiking through Romania

In September 2025 we hiked the first portion of the Via Transilvanica in Romania, starting from the north in Bucovina. The journey was definitely the highlight of my year, more than a little bit life-changing, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. This year, we will continue with the next portion, the Highlands. I took my little point-and-shoot with me as well as some Kodak Proimage film, and you can see the results below. I can't wait to go back.

  • Selected Photography (2018-2024)

A selection of photographs from 2018 to 2024. My goal is typically to capture a subject in its idealised, definitive form. I photograph on analog film, primarily because it's fun, but also because I like the idea of transforming a passing moment into a (semi-) permanent physical form. Inside a image on film, I find, things become still. They are not liable to disappear with a keystroke.

  • Stemtree

Stemtree is a programming project that came about in an attempt to find a rhyme or reason to the grammatical gender of nouns in German. You give it a JSON formatted dictionary of nouns - for example: { "Gender": "der", "Word": "Schmetterling" } and it graphs the tree of noun stems. Each node in the tree represents a (potential) noun stem, and importantly displays what proportion of words with that stem belong to which genders, thus revealing the hidden patterns in the language you're scratching your head trying to learn, and which no native can tell you. Originally I wrote it in Blazor, since I was learning it for work at the time. This version is in TypeScript.
